About the event
We’re in for a special treat at this year’s AAHSSCPA Annual Potluck! On December 20, our gathering will include a performance of Miss Lydia’s Church, presented by PenOwl Productions Theatre Company and written and produced by its founder, Dr. Dorothy King, a retired assistant professor of sociology.
Set in January 1924, in the middle of the night and the middle of a snowstorm, the story brings together four strangers: two Black and two White, two women and two men. Two are steeped in religion, while two look to astronomy. Despite their very different perspectives, all four share a desire for better relations between the races.
What brought them together that snowy night? A moon phase? A planetary shift? Or something deeper and farther away?
Through their unexpected encounter, Miss Lydia’s Church explores the difficult conversations surrounding race in America, the fears that keep people silent, and our responsibility to help create a world…
